Democrats have a terrible history of civil rights from the Civil War to the present. They try to overcome this stigma by claiming that a "southern strategy" started in the 1960s resulted a shift of the racists of the south to the Republican Party. This argument about the “southern strategy” has been the Democratic spin all these years as they try to erase their sordid racist history. Unfortunately, many people have fallen for this ploy resulting in incredible misinformation. The Republican platform of 1964 spoke of Johnson’s failure to support “just aspirations of the minority groups” and criticized him for failing to apply programs initiated by Republicans to provide economic opportunities for African American citizens. Other planks also called for civil rights measures.
The reason for the shift in party allegiance by Blacks was Johnson’s Great Society politics designed to shift power to the federal government. His War on Poverty was declared at a time when poverty had been declining for years and his first Job Corps started when the unemployment rate was less then 5 percent. The purpose of these programs was to switch dependency from private and local agencies to federal programs created by Johnson and his political successors. That strategy continues to this day.
Instead of empowering Blacks, his programs were an attempt to create a dependent group that owed allegiance to the Democratic Party. His plan worked as the Blacks completely depend on the Democratic Party to this day despite the fact that the war on poverty and unemployment have never worked. President Obama’s record is recent evidence of these facts.
If southern racists switched their allegiance to the Republican Party they took until the 90s to do so. Of the 21 southern Democratic senators who opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, all but one remained Democrats or those seats stayed with the Democrats for a quarter of a century. There was no racist switch taking place but rather a gradual shift over to the party that provides the enablement programs and played the race card as needed to discredit the party of civil rights.
One of the more boisterous of these Democratic segregationists was Texas representative John Dowdy whose mouth was constantly spitting out racist invectives. Dowdy was thrown out of office in 1966 and replaced with a Republican with a respectable record on civil rights. His name was George H. W. Bush.
The first term of Barack Obama should serve as a current indicator of the failure of Democrats to meet the social and economic needs of Blacks. Their unemployment rate under Obama increased from 12.7 % to 14.1 %. Black teen unemployment has increased to 37.9 %. Because of its usurped position as champions of civil rights, all the Democrats have to do is blame the Republicans. Under Bush the racial gap was narrowed but it has widened again under Obama. All economic indictors are bad. Food stamps are up. Black illegitimate births are skyrocketing. Sexually transmitted diseases among Blacks are way up. New York now aborts 60% of Black babies.
There are racists everywhere but the Democratic Party is the one that has systematized racism.
